CD Reviews

Belgian jazz and world class!
Veerle Anthonis | Belgium | 11/22/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"To all of you who don't know Bert Joris yet as a brilliant trumpet player and composer I would highly recommend his most recent disc "Magone". His typical soft lyric trumpet sound is everywhere on the CD and it holds you from the first note. He may remind you to some extend to Chet Baker, however this is pure jazz from 21st century... Almost all titles are composed by Bert Joris and you'll notice the diversity of the tracks immediately. The CD takes off with an easy swinging "Mr.Dodo"(with the superb support of Dado Moroni on Fender Rhodes)"Magone" more laid back jazz, "Triple"(dedicated to Joris' cat)has a catchy chorus, "Anna" with Bert and his intimicy on his best, "King Kombo" is a very swinging tune supported by the absolute rhythym section, Dré Pallemaerts on drums and Philippe Aerts at the bass and Dado with a nice piano solo, "The mighty bobcat"with Dado in a lead role along with Philippe Aerts on bass, "I fall in love too easily" is just an exceptionel example of what a standard can become, "Signes & signatures" you can't get the tune out of your head(don't say I didn't warne you!), "To Philip" is dedicated to Philip Catherine with whom Bert Joris has been playing for more than 15 years(excellent piano and drums), "Alone at last" is that blues song that makes your day end up in beauty, "Benoit" is the fantastic transformation of a famous classic piece "Het beiaardlied" of Peter Benoit. You can write and talk about music for hours and hours, but only if you go out searching, finding and listening to that right music you can judge for yourself. What are you waiting for?
