Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
Hardly anyone can say they've actually heard a complete performance of Berlioz's remarkable oratorio, "The Childhood of Christ." That's unfortunate, because the three-part work for soloists, choir, and orchestra contains some of Berlioz's most colorful and expressive music. A contemporary poet and frequent critic of Berlioz's other scores declared that in this work, the composer had achieved "a masterpiece of simplicity." Indeed, the music and scoring invokes descriptions such as tenderness, elegance, and economy. The work begins with Herod, tormented by a recurring dream, ordering death for all newborn children. The second part concerns the scene at the manger, in which we hear the work's most famous music, "The shepherds' farewell to the Holy Family." The third part depicts Mary, Joseph, and the Christ child's flight into Egypt. Of the three or four most recent recordings, this one from 1994 enjoys the strongest cast as well as benefitting from excellent sound. --David Vernier

CD Reviews

IMPERDIBLE!

"Hermosa interpretación de Matthew Best de la obra más tierna de Berlioz, un sonido orquestal bien balanceado y de gran expresión melódica, acompañado de un excelente trabajo de los solistas y del coro. La grabación es de primer nivel.Fuertemente recomendado."

"I agree with everything the gentleman from Bolivia wrote even though I couldn't understand a word of it. Anyway, (for English speakers) this is a very fine recording of this piece on all counts, much better than the Dutoit and about on par with the Herreweghe. I assume it's neglected because it lacks the dazzling Berlioz over-the-top qualities that he is best known for (and they are only a facet of his incredible genius as musical explorers eventually discover) and possibly because folks might believe it's a seasonal piece (which it's not). Please look into this work (and this recording is a good way to)--it's well worth it."
