The 'ukulele is not commonly thought of as a jazz solo instrument, but after hearing Benny Chong on "Ukulele Jazz," we are sure you will agree that the 'ukulele is every bit as sultry and moving as a saxophone or guitar. The complexity and sophistication of Benny's improvisations are evident throughout the cd, especially on the solo pieces where he plays alone with no accompaniment, such as the beautiful "Ka Wailele O Nuuanu." But variety is the spice of life, and variety is what you get on "Ukulele Jazz." From the opening ensemble piece, "Happy Talk," Benny, takes you on a head-bobbing, funkadelic ride, then sends you into a soothing trance with "Like Someone in Love," one of six solo tunes. There are surprises and musical twists throughout the cd. "Ukulele Jazz" is an album you can just throw in your cd player and listen to over and over again.
