"Why is Bennie Wallace not better known? His command of the tenor saxophone is daunting and his ability to jump up and down through the rich harmonies of T. Monk unprecedented. This is, I believe, an early recording by this great artist. Long before so many artists felt it as a duty to honor Monk's music, he revisits the great classics of the Master with innovative arrangements and very invigorating improvisations. His sound recalls Coleman Hawkins, his phrases Eric Dolphy, his melodic sense Thelonius Monk, yet he is unique.The sound and the musical language of Bennie Wallace are indispensible for a complete understanding of today's jazz - thus this CD is highly recommended."
