First performed on May 16, 1829 in Parma, Zaira was a resounding failure and never given again in Bellini?s lifetime, though the composer re-used parts of it in later works such as I Capuleti ed i Montecchi, and even Norma. Today, it is evident that the opera has a great deal of beautiful music in it and that the initial rude reception had more to do with audience politics than intrinsic worth.
