"Loving all things English, I simply HAD to acquire a CD containing "Music for England" in its title. What a lush collection this is! Each piece is enjoyable, but the true gem is George Butterworth's "Banks of Green Willow". Beginning simply, the piece builds to a dramatic climax, then again returns to a gentle, meditative feel. As the end of the piece nears, Butterworth incorporates what must be one of the most plantive melodies ever written in the Post-Romantic era, first played by the strings, then repeated by flute and harp. It is a positively heartbreaking theme, made all the more poignant by the fact that Butterworth was tragically killed in the last year of World War I.For those far from "England's mountains green," these evocative selections will surely bring you closer. It's a must-have for all Anglophiles!"
