CD Reviews

Outstanding

"The only downside to this excellent new disc is that it doesn't include all the concertos for solo harpsichord. The four concertos included (BWV 1052-1054 and 1056) are treated to deluxe performances by conductor Fasolis, harpsichordist Cera, and the Barocchisti. Cera provides brilliant accounts of the outer movements, with touches of ormentation both graceful and witty. The emotional content of the inner movements isn't slighted either. He plays a reproduction by Robert Hill of a Ruckers original in 1052,1054,and 1056. A reproduction of a Pascal Taskin original by the late Robert Dowd is used in 1053.

The period instrument strings are both precise and tangy. Conductor Fasolis and his players bring out all sorts of wonderful details in the inner voices without over italicizing. The smallish forces (about a dozen players) are recorded in a fairly resonant acoustic, adding a welcome body to the sound. I have listened to the SACD multi-channel layer only and the sound is very impressive, open and detailed with a very good balance between soloist and orchestra.

This is a wonderful start to what will hopefully be an integral of these wonderful works. My collection includes the harpsichord versions of Egarr, Hill, Kipnis, Leonhardt, and Pinnock. On the piano, I have Gavrilov, Gould, Hewitt, Perahia, and Schiff. Go out and buy a copy of this newcomer for the sheer enjoyment of timeless music beautifully played."
Gently energy

"I was enchanted by this execution.

I Barocchisti and Cera have a wonderful feeling, and Fasolis gives to these pieces a nice energy, "Italian" but not too much (to make a comparison, even if I love the style of Il Giardino Armonico and Antonini, here Fasolis and I Barocchisti keep tasty without risking to be extreme).

This is one of the few CDs I can play again and again, without getting bored.

Good selection

"
this is a good selection of JS Bach harpsichord concerti very well played indeed. the only drawback is that ill drawn cover art is repeated all over the container, back, front and inside and I find that bothersome since I don't care for the art at all. But once the CD is in the player it is wonderful."
