CD Reviews

The Beginnings Of A Great Band,Still Maturing
C. Hunt | grantville pa | 05/04/2007
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I had heard the name 'Babylon A.D.' since I'm a huge hair metal fan but I had never heard them before,so when I found out that their early works had been re-released I bought this and a few of their later releases

the later releases are very, very good, excellent production and fantastic hooks, this release was before that polished period

'In The Beginning' is a sign of the great things to come

the talent is very obvious, the guitar solos are fantastic and the vocals are very very solid

the problem with this release is in the songwriting

there is not a lot of hooks here, that is not to say no hooks at all, just not nearly as good as their later releases

the blaring exception to that is the absolutely brilliant song 'Do You Want It' which reminds me very strongly of 'Warrant' at their best

all the songs are very good in their own right, just not as memorable as songs on their later releases

but this is pure 80s hair metal and that is a good thing

if you love this style of music I highly recommend it

their style is similar to 'Warrant' 'Faster Pussycat' and 'La Guns'

the upside - some very good catchy tunes,80s hair metal style, great musicians and vocals, and the song 'Do You Want It' is as good as anything out there in this catagory

the downside - the songs are not quite as catchy as later releases, you can tell they are still finding their sound, still learning

the bottom line - this is a great opportunity to hear a band with tons of potential in the beginning stages

if you love hair metal I highly recommend this (and X-Terra's releases 'Wolves' and their new album 'X-Nihilo which also has alot of this style in them)

but if you are new to Babylon A.D. check out their later releases first to give them a fair chance and then pick up this one to hear how it all began! Donutman says so!!!"
