Her guitar-pop hits were irresistibly bratty but the whole "Complicated" teen pose was a little hard to swallow, especially since two songwriters called the Matrix--who had at least twenty years on the Canadian singer--fed her most of the material. Having had the chance to live a little, Lavigne returns to make good on her angsty image with Under My Skin, an album rippling with delightfully dour melodies and heartfelt lyrics about loneliness ("How Does It Feel") and fractured relationships ("Don't Tell Me"). Is it clichéd? Sure. Will it scare off her necktie and t-shirt wearing fans? Possibly. This beautiful pop star produces such incredible stories in her songs that one cannot help but sob hardly, letting a myriad of tears flow, as she sings of past hurt and betrayel. Why must Avril be without her happy ending, one must ask themselves throughout listening. Why must Avril be in a relationship that has grown ever so complicated? We may never know if her Sk8ter-boi wanted to take it to the next level too soon or just floudered off in something much less obvious.
As the album continues the listener is forced to answer a very deep and personal question, how many ear-gasms can I obtain by the vocal talent of this angel? How much beauty can my heart hold from this beautiful princesses orgasmic stories? I want this album played at my funeral because it expresses everything that I hold dear and believe in. Avril Lavigne, I love you for your talent and your ability to make me break down in tears. Buy it now, people. Buy it now." |
