CD Reviews

Intersting compilation, dismal notes
Richard Links | Berkeley, California | 02/07/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I am a fan of the British Folk scene, past and present. When I stumbled across this cd in the local thrift shop in Berkeley, CA, (my big $2 purchase, incidentally!) I was excited at the prospect of hearing more work of Ashley Hutchings.

The cd is very nice, but I have to tell you one thing: The notes are quite disappointing. There are lots of other musicians who participated in the tunes being represented, but the notes completely fail to mention who is being featured on each of the extensive number of selections.

I call that inexcusable, to say the least.

Some tracks were seemingly taken from less than stellar sources, sonically-speaking, and some levels are not well matched to ones preceding or following, but their relative rarety makes me appreciate their inclusion.

If you are a serious fan of British Folk and like the idea of some members of Fairport coming together on a certain number of these tracks, I say, "go for it", but be forewarned that the notes will not help you much in identifying WHO is doing the solos, unless you are already very familiar with the personnel."
