CD Reviews

EXCELLENT TRACKS CUT TOO SHORT

"DON'T GET ME WRONG- I LOVE LOVE LOVE AVB... STATE OF TRANCE 2006 WAS AN AMAZING DOUBLE CD MIX AND THE CONCEPTS OF BOTH CD 1 AND CD 2 HELPED TO ESTABLISH THAT... AS A MATTER OF FACT, PRETTY MUCH EVERY ARMIN MIX, ARTIST ALBUM AND STATE OF TRANCE RADIO EPISODE IS EXCELLENT... BUT THIS IS SUB-PAR FOR ONE REASON AND ONE REASON ONLY

THE WHOLE IDEA OF THE YEARMIX TO TAKE 80-SOMETHING SONGS AND CRAM THEM INTO A TWO HOUR MIX... WHILE THE TUNES ARE EASY ON THE EAR, THE MIX BECOMES FRUSTRATING DUE TO 30-45 SECONDS OF A SONG MIXED INTO ANOTHER 30-45 SECOND SONG MIXED INTO- YOU GET THE POINT... I HEARD THE YEARMIX ON HIS RADIO SHOW "A STATE OF TRANCE" AND QUITE FRANKLY, I WILL PASS ON THIS...

THERE IS NO ROOM TO ACTUALLY ENJOY THE SONGS BECAUSE THEY GO BY TOO FAST- THE WHOLE POINT OF A MIX, I THOUGHT, WAS TO ENABLE THE LISTENER TO SET OUT ON HIS/HER OWN MUSICAL JOURNEY THROUGH SET-BUILDING: THIS MEANS PEAKS, HILLS AND VALLEYS AND PLATEAUS OF AUDIO EUPHORIA... THIS SOUNDS MORE LIKE A MASH UP TO ME THAN ANYTHING ELSE- AND SOME OF THE TRACKS GO BY SO FAST, YOU TEND TO WONDER WHETHER YOU REALLY HEARD A SPECIFIC SONG OR NOT...

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR LISTENERS THAT VIEW DJ SETS AS PIECES OF ART... IF YOU WANT A TINY TASTE OF WHAT THE HOTTEST TRANCE RECORDS OF 2006 WERE, THEN BY ALL MEANS PICK THIS UP... AND IF YOU WANNA SEE HOW FAST SOMEONE CAN MIX THE NEXT RECORD IN, THEN BE MY GUEST... I'LL STICK TO MY WEEKLY DOSE OF ASOT IN THE MEANTIME!"
Something different from Armin and it's fanatstic

"Didn't mean to write the review but I have to because of John P's; it simply doesn't do the justice.

This is just an amazing work by Armin! If you want entire tunes there are plenty of compilations out there, if you want mixed tunes there are plenty of mixes out there and of course unbeatable Armins ASOT shows and compilations. But this is something quite different. I was amazed how he mixed 87 songs into 2 hours!

What you get here is the heart of the tune, its best part! No long intros or repeating of the main theme. This is relentless tempo full of energy and melody. One after another amazing tunes mix into one another, Armin is at his best mixing form! I just can't get enough of it. Sometimes there are so many amazing tunes in secession that it makes me want to stand up and jump or scream of joy :-) Both CD's are great but second is even better! When `Kuffdam & Plant feat. Terry Ferminal - The Ones We Loved (Dogzilla Remix)' blasts in you know you are in for amazing ride!

Don't think twice, just get it! There are so many classic mixes and compilations out there but this is something different! All the best 2006 had to offer in one place, beautifully mixed.

Happy listening! :-)"
This compilation serves its purpose... I think.

"Being a long-time fan of Armin's work, I was intrigued to see such a ridiculously long track list for a 2 CD compilation. I realized that I would most likely run across more than a few tracks that would get me going and then, moments later, move right along to the next. For me, this CD served as a way to discover gems that escaped my attention in '06. So as long as that's what you want to get out of it, I highly recommend it. For a party? No way.
