CD Reviews

Great music from a band you should know better

"After Col. Bruce Hampton (ret.) left ARU to avoid the grind of touring, the band has come back with a great CD. While not as "jam" packed as the first three CDs "in a perfect world" is still loaded with top notch playing and great song-writting. Vox have been taken over by Paul Henson whos R&B voice is (to say the least) more traditional if notas fun as The Col.s. Jimmy Herring and Oteil are in great form as expected, as is the rest of the band. What suprised me was the song-writting - the songs are tight (none are over 6min.)while still maintaining alot of solo space for the band. This is a great 'first' CD if you havent been lucky enough to hear the band live and dont enjoy long jams. Conversly if you dig 'ABB live at the Filmore' or any of the Dicks Picks GD cds buy the 'live' cd. I find it sad that such a talented and listenable band gets so little exposure. I know that my tastes are not "the norm", but it seems that great bands from so many styles are simply ignored while hair-farming has-beens make the news by getting a(nother) DUI or (re)entering rehab."
Best CD by Aquarium Rescue Unit, hands down!

"The is the best CD by the ARU hands down. While I like Bruce Hampton, this CD is the ARU doing it THEIR way. And I'm writing this in 2003.This is also the best spotlight of Jimmy Herring comparing all CDs including other ARU CDs, Jazz is Dead, Frogwings etc. The jazz/funk/blues style on this hilights all the players to their max. While of course Otiel is great, the drumming of Jeff Sipe is of the charts on this one. This is the band that should reform, they don't seem to realize that.Awesome!"
This is the coolest funk out there, second to Parliament

"Oteil's bass stylings rock. Him being the teacher of the legendary Victor Wooten who plays with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones says enough. "Stand Up People" is one of my favorite tracks that I have ever heard."
