Synopsis

Album Description
2009 collection. One of the first great female Jazz singers, in the late '20s, Annette Hanshaw ranked near the top with Ethel Waters, the Boswell Sisters, and Mildred Bailey. Unlike her contemporary Ruth Etting, Hanshaw could improvise and swing while also being a strong interpreter of lyrics. She was not quite 16 when she started her recording career. Billed as "the Personality Girl," Annette Hanshaw (whose trademark was saying, "That's all" at the end of her records) wearied of touring and show business in general and retired in 1934. 24 tracks. Bygone Days.

CD Reviews

SHE SUFFUSED THE LYRICS WITH SWEET INNOCENCE
Barry McCanna | Normandy, France | 07/17/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A new CD devoted to Annette Hanshaw is a cause for celebration, particularly one that quite literally spans her recording career. My introduction to her came by way of two World Record Club LPs, which covered 1928-31, and CD reissues have tended also to concentrate on particular periods. So I suppose some duplication was inevitable, but more obscure items are included also, such as three tracks with Frank Ferera's Hawaiian Trio. Elsewhere the accompaniments feature the cream of New York's studio musicians, then struggling to weather the Depression, many of whom went on to become household names. Annette had a very clear natural singing voice which suffused the lyrics with a sweet innocence, and which together with her relaxed delivery is a delight to listen to. Sound quality is excellent and, despite its budget price, the CD is attractively packaged in a slip-case, carries good track details, and a comprehensive liner note by Peter Dempsey."
GREAT music and a darn good price too

"Thanks to The Big Broadcast on Sunday nights @ 8pm (WFUV _Radio 90.7) I was introduced to this superb singer of the 1920's & 1930's.

The price was right too!"
