CD Reviews

50 TRACKS FROM THE EMPORER OF EASY
Robert Rechter | Melbourne AUSTRALIA | 01/17/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is one of those well presented must have compilations for the lounge music enthusiast, Andy Williams at his hippest and coolest. Travel back in time, turn the hi fi down terribly low, and just drift. For that swinging cocktail party or groovy retro pad this is as SMOOTH AS IT GETS. Revel in the finger snapping up tempo 'The House Of Bamboo', 'Spooky', 'Up Up And Away', 'Music To Watch Girls By', 'Happy Heart' and 'Call Me Irresponsible'. Wallow in the mellowness of 'The Shadow Of Your Smile', 'Can't Get Used To Losing You', 'Charade', 'Whistling In The Dark' and the classic 'MacArthur Park'. Above all just sink back in the sofa and enjoy. Robert Rechter. Jan 2002"
The best Andy Williams compilation
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 10/18/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This compilation has all the hits that matter and a fair sprinkling of covers of classic songs. It begins with Music to watch girls by, which became Andy's first UK top ten hit for 26 years following its use in a commercial, and ends with May each day, a 1965 classic that provides a fitting way to end such a fine collection. In between, you will find the other classic songs associated with Andy (not all of them hits for him) including Happy heart, Born free, Almost there, Can't get used to losing you, Can't help falling in love, Home loving man, Solitaire, Moon river, Can't take my eyes off you and Days of wine and roses. Also here are Canadian sunset, the song that started it all for Andy when it became an American top ten hit in 1956, and Butterfly, which gave Andy a number one hit in both Britain and America in 1957. Those rock'n'roll songs did not appeal to Andy but they made him famous.Andy's distinctive interpretations of songs made famous by others are well represented too. These include Up up and away, The impossible dream, Call me irresponsible, MacArthur park, Amazing grace, On the street where you live, April in Paris, Unchained melody, Danny boy, September song and (best of all) Abraham Martin and John, to which Andy also adds a bit about his friend Bobby Kennedy. With such compilations, it is always possible to argue about song selection, but this includes all the essentials in one superb package. If you only want one collection of Andy's music, this is the best there is. If, like me, this is not enough, this is still a great foundation on which to build a collection of his music."
