CD Reviews

Steve Carmichael, Saxophonist
Steve Carmichael | USA | 02/02/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"With this record of three major works for the tenor saxophone, James Houlik has given the world a much needed lesson in Tenor saxophone. The compositions are performed most beautifully. Russell Peck's "The Upward Stream" will take you on a ride that you won't want to end. James Houlik's lyricism on Robert Ward's "Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra" will rip your heart right out! Morton Gould wrote the wonderfull "Diversions" for this CD. All the compositions are with great orchestras and written for James Houlik. If you buy one classical Tenor saxophone recording ( or any saxophone recording!) buy this one. It is a must have CD from the Master himself."
The definitive classical tenor saxophone recording

"There are entirely too many aspects of Mr. Houlik's playing to be praised in the 1,000 words I have alotted in this space. The warmth of his tone and his unique vibrato are showcased in the 4th mvmnt of Gould's "Diversions"; he shows off his technical and altissimo chops in the Ward concerto. Whether playing adagio or vivace, forte or piano, there is a continuity of line and an abundance of shape rarely seen from any other player in today's saxophone world. You get the idea. "The saxophonists of the world owe much to James Houlik's evangelism of the tenor saxophone as a classical solo instrument, and this CD clearly shows the fruits of his labor as well as the reasons he has been so successful. I am particularly fond of the Gould "Diversions". If you are interested in tenor saxophone as a classical instrument, or simply interested in hearing world-class wind instrument performances in general, this belongs in your collection!"
