CD Reviews

Articulate even if in Old School Accompianment
Donald Christensen | USA | 11/30/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Allen Vizzutti can do things that no other trumpeter can do. Just ask his fellow players on the European scene. On this album, Vizzutti has some of the best rhythm supporters, including the great Chick Corea.

His overall group sound is reminiscent of early 80's hard-fusion with intense rhythm ala' Corea. The only downside is that the ambience of the recordings sound dated at times (tone of the bass playing in particular). If you want that old school hard fusion era sound than consider this an upside.

By far the most noticeable characteristic is Allen Vizzutti's articulation and phrasing -- original, lyrical and forceful, with range, range, range (hence the title, "Skyrocket"). Vizzutti has a softer side on flugelhorn performances, particularly on ballads, to compliment the bright playing of his other horns.

Influences take off from funk to classical rounded off by precise hard fusion rhythm. I am not a trumpet player, but would cite Vizzutti's expression as the most diverse of our time.

One of the Best in the World Today
G. Enos | Rochester, New York United States | 06/08/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've had the blessing of having been instructed to play trumpet while I was in high school by Mr. Vizzuti while he was finishing up at Eastman School of Music in the late '60s(he had to do some student teaching at local high schools), and seeing him play twice, once with Woody Herman in the late '70s and then back at the Eastman Theatre here in Rochester, NY last year, this last time being an all-classical performance. His range is superior to anyone I know or have heard play, possibly even topping my idol Maynard F. This album is a sampler of what he can do should he ever put his mind to it jazz-wise. His tone is great, mellow, and his technique and fingering the best in the world. That may sound like Greek to many non-players, but believe me, it means a lot to musicians, and if it means a lot to us, it should to everyone.

For everyone, this is a treat for those who appreciate jazz sound that features virtuousity and amazing range, which I haven't heard since I first heard on the album Maynard Ferguson did and his song "Ole". Trumpeters who grew up in the sixties and seventies know what I mean. Buy this."
Allen Vizzutti Is A Master Trumpeter With Flawless Technique
Jonathan Fowler | Spring, Texas United States | 11/25/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"You should buy this CD just to hear the tune "Zig Zag". That alone is worth the money!!! Allen Vizzutti has flawless technique along with extremely clean and perfect articulations. Every trumpet player should strive to sound like this."
