CD Reviews

Excellent reissue of performances from Brendel's early matur
John David Rodriguez | Haverhill, MAssachusetts United States | 05/30/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a very important compilation and release from Brilliant Classics of recordings made by Brendel in his early mature period. These date from the later part of the

60s and were originally released by Vanguard in 1969. At this point

Brendel's international reputation was already well established. Those

who have been disappointed by Brendel's later more mannered style should

listen to these recordings and others of his early period before passing judgement.

The sound quality of these recordings also holds up well.

The set consists of six CDs which are arranged by composer. The packaging is somewhat spartan and liner notes are not included.

CD1 consists of the Mozart Piano Concertos No. 9 K271 and No. 14 K449

with I Solisti di Zagreb conducted by Antonio Janigro. As a Mozart specialist

one would expect Brendel to turn in high calibre performances here and he does.

Five stars.

CD2 includes the Mozart Piano Sonata K310, Fantasy K396, Rondo K511,

and Variations on a Menuet by Duport K573. Same comments for CD1 pertain.

Five stars.

CD3 includes the Schubert Sonatas D958 and D840 and the German Dances Op. 33 D783. This disk has had less than stellar reviews, with several reviewers finding it excessively mannered. A slight disappointment. Four stars.

CD4 features the Schumann Fantasy in C major Op. 17 and Symphonic Etudes Op. 13.

Perhaps Brendel's orientation as a Classicist produces a reading at an emotional

pitch that is a bit less than some prefer, particularly in the Fantasy. He shines in

the Etudes however. Overall four stars for the Fantasy and Five for the Etudes.

CD5 includes the Chopin Polonaises Op. 53, Op. 40 No. 2, Op. 44, Op. 61, Op. 22.

Brendel is not known for his interpretations of Chopin but turns in an excellent

reading here although some may prefer Rubinstein. Still, five stars.

CD6 consist of the Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies 2,3 (listed as 13),8,13,15,17 all performed with great feeling and insight by Brendel. Five stars.

In summary, this set is a must for Brendel fans and a great value for all music lovers."
