Synopsis
Product Description Most widely known as a first call sideman with the likes of the late Michael Brecker and Chris Potter, guitarist Adam Rogers is himself a composer of note, as he's documented on four prior Criss Cross recordings. On his fifth outing for the label, Rogers offers a crackling set of standards in trio format with world-class partners bassist John Pattucci and drummer Clarence Penn, placing his formidable technique at the service of musical imperatives and swinging all the way. |
CD ReviewsBass is almost inaudible Alfred C. Marra | somerville, ma | 10/26/2009 (3 out of 5 stars) "I really dig adam rogers' recorded legacy thus far. and the playing, tunes and the arrangements on this album are all top notch. however, that being said, the bass is mixed so low on this recording that a lot of the time i find myself struggling to hear exactly what patitucci's playing and getting distracted in the overall listening because i can't hear him. this sounds more like a duet with clarence penn and suggestions of a bass player in the background. which is a shame because the tunes are so rythmically hip that if the bass was audible i probabbly wouldn't be able to put this album down...oddly enough though if there were no bass at all it wouldn't be missed that much because of rogers' virtuosity. i guess it's the uncommitted presence that's annoying me here... and i've listened to it on 7 different sets of speakers from high to low quality including studio monitors and headphones with similar results. bah!" Another home run from Adam Rogers Dennis Coonfield Jr. | Omaha, NE | 12/29/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "I rarely write reviews on Amazon but I think this album needs a higher overall rating. Personally I had no trouble hearing John Patitucci's excellent playing. I've listened to the album on four different sound systems and the whole mix sounds great on all of them. My two musician room mates (one whose a jazz bassist) agree with me. Adam is definitely one of the best jazz guitarists out there. This has been a great year for him. Besides this excellent album he's made fantastic contributions to Chris Potter's "Ultrahang" and James Carter's "Heaven on Earth". Definitely an album worth checking out. Don't miss it!"
