BACK WITH A VENGEANCE!
BK | Maine | 08/23/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Damn! What a comeback album from ACHERON! After a 6 year absence Acheron returns with their most cohesive album since 1998's "Those Who Have Risen." The album is the first with their new guitarist who is melodic yet fits the brutal and straight forward sound of Acheron. The album starts off with an air raid siren then immediately kicks in with blast beats courtesy of Kyle Severn...here is a track by track break down

1. "The Apocalypse" which is almost seven minutes long, is fast but slows up for the chorus with a catchy riff. The second half of the song takes on a dramatic moody feel - great way to open the album.

2. "Rise of Rebellion" has a much slower and darker start which is a great transition from "The Apocalypse." This song has some great "dive bomb" solos ala Slayer. The second half of this song really picks up the pace and closes strong. Very melodic yet brutal so far.

3. "Blood Oath" is redone from the Wolfen Society EP that Vince Crowley did back in 2001. This song has some "gang" style back up vocals but the back up vocals are very thin sounding. This is a very old school song and could have fit on an early Acheron album. Not bad but not my favorite.

4. "I am Heathen" has to be the best death metal song in the last 10 years! This song is top notch! It starts with a catchy riff with Vince barking in between the start/stop approach of the riff before it kicks in with a fast and heavy riff. This could be an "anthem" for death metal!

5. "Godless (We Are Gods)" has a heavy groove to it. The music is very heavy and some parts remind me of their "Lex Talionis" days. The vocals really stick out on this one. The middle of this song has a good Slayer/Nasty Savage sound to it.

6. "Salvation Through Hatred" is another fast paced song out of the gate with tempo changes to very doomy. The last minute of the song has some very fast drumming and closes strong. Very memorable song.

7. "Power And Might" starts immediately with Vince singing over a chunky riff with lots of groove. The chorus is very memorable with a solid tempo change. Probably the second best after "I am Heathen."

8. "Millennium's End" reminds me musically of "Voices Within" from Lex Talionis in a good way. This song is very dark and haunting and probably the most doomy and atmospheric song on the album. The last 2 minutes of the song has a much better "gang" style vocal with a ripping solo to end the song.

9. "A New Age" is a mid-paced track with brutal vocals and once again has some Slayer type riffs (South of Heaven era) that are very catchy. The song closes with a nice touch of keyboards to keep the dark mood.

10. "Anno Armageddon" is a great instrumental to close out the disc.

This album is full of twists and turns and is very catchy with a modern yet retro feel to it. Definitely a solid release from Acheron. Looking forward to the next one already! Also, you can probably get it much cheaper from Century Media's mail order or directly from the band's myspace as I did.
