CD Reviews

The Abyss has a nice touch...
12/13/1998
(4 out of 5 stars)

"With the Abyss, we find another one of those blackmetal side projects that are popping up all over the underground scene... with a twist! The Abyss is made up of the same 3 guys who make up the ever-classic band, Hypocrisy, only they all play different instruments. The Abyss plays a form of brutal blackmetal with a slight melodic edge at times. The drums, played by Peter Tägtgren, are blistering and unrelenting, much in the style of such acts as Dark Funeral and Gorgoroth. As a matter of fact, The Abyss has a very similar sound to the newer Gorgoroth releases, including Destroyer. Mikael Hedlund is on vocals, and he does a very nice job. They are comparable to Gorgoroth meets Emperor meets Dimmu Borgir. Lars Szöke is on guitar, also doing a fine job with buzzsaw and chainsaw distortion to them. Some of the more memorable songs include: "Satan's Majestic Empire", "Summon the Beast" and "Feasting the Remains of Heaven". If you like blackmetal, you'll like this. Also, get this NOW if you are a Hypocrisy fan!!"
This is really not bad.

"Don't expect something like PAIN or Hypocrisy. This is good, old-fashioned black metal. Fast and raw (not the Dimmu Borgir style, either). If you're into the brutal old school blast-beat black metal, than Abyss is the right stuff for you."
