These six great string quartets are mainstays of the repertory, performed by most string quartets and recorded by many leading ensembles. The members of the Kujiken String Quartet, playing on period instruments, include Kuijken brothers Sigiswald (first violin) and Wieland (cello), experienced early music players who have played in numerous ensembles. But they may not have had much experience as part of a string quartet. These performances sound carefully rehearsed, and they have the expected virtues of good sound and balance. But the spontaneous expression that grows out of performances is largely missing. --Leslie Gerber
