Fine Music Expertly Played
Patrick Colm Hogan | 01/05/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Listeners familiar with New Orleans jazz know that most tunes are played in one of four or five keys. Of course, New Orleans jazz musicians often find themselves playing together when they have never had a chance to practice as a group. For the ensemble to work together nicely, some standardization is necessary. Nonetheless, there is a certain monotony about this. In ALL THE KEYS, McDermott has set out to change things a bit, playing tunes in "all the keys," not only the four or five standards.
The conception is clever. And the album might have been only clever. But the quality of the music and, even more, the quality of the playing make it far, far more. McDermott not only brings unusual keys into his music, he brings a deep connection with classical music, particularly the Impressionism of Debussy. Moreover, his playing has remarkable precision and fluency. Despite this, McDermott does not drift from his basis in jazz and ragtime. He brings something new to the New Orleans idiom.
In sum, this is a fine album that many listeners should appreciate and enjoy very much."
