Carving out his own sound
Dmitri Resnik | New Orleans | 06/27/2000

"Teddy Morgan made a huge conribution to the blues when he was on James Harman's record "Two sides to every story".Barely 21 at the time ,Morgan put down some guitar work that showed maturity way beyond most guitarists of any age. Here he is with his own record and it is a real smoker!Outstanding "live sound" expert Jerry Hall,( who also worked with Harman ),lends his engineering talent to this project and as a result it has the warm ,intimate sound that is lacking in so many records today. The few Morgan originals stand out among the well chosen covers that make up the rest of the album. My favorite is Morgan's "Cryin' Time Again" which takes you straight back to the 6/8 swamp-pop ballads that came out of south looziana in the 50's.Morgan's solid ,unaffected vocals get better every year and on this cut they yearn. The guitar solo's are simple yet heartwrenching.Morgan gets a tone all his own from an old Harmony hollow body and perhaps a bassman amp.His style is reminiscent of the "west coast" sound that is all the rage right now.But where some seem to play kooky off the wall stuff just for it's own sake, Morgan knows when to hold back and not over-do-it and to speak with his playing.Great space and phrasing in his guitar work show that he knows less is always more.Morgan is accompanied by Harman alum Esten Cooke ,who lays down unique solid grooves on the drum kit and upright bassist Eric Mathew. At a young age Morgan has already left some giant footprints in the blues, but like many great artists is still relatively unknown.Lets hope he doesn't form a " boy band " to pay the bills!Get this record and spread the word about him to insure he doesn't.Highly recommended."
His Best still

"Teddy Morgan shows on this CD that he is one of the best bluesguitarist in a traditional style. This CD is in my opinion among the best bluesrecords of all time. His next 2 CD's Louisiana Rain, and Lost love and highways, are more poppy/countryrock and, while they are not bad at all, this first CD 'Ridin' in Style', is still his best. Don't hesitate buy it and have a party at your home!"

"I heard Teddy Morgan on XM Radio and immediatley ordered some CD's and when I listened to "Ridin' in Style" I was very pleased with the music. It is a very good toe tapping, beer drinking, kicking up your heels music with some very good songs. Cry, Cry, Cry, is a very nice tune."
