Beautiful interpretation of the mystery of Christmas

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's Church in Chicago has the inside track on the interpretation of Gregorian chant."
Wonderful tonal quality.
Vocal Music | 02/04/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is one of the first music discs that I bought and it was not a disappointment. The music is vocal except for a few bell chimes and a short bell peal on track four. About half of the songs are sung with multiple voices which is fortunate since I am not fond of single voice Gregorian chant that makes up half of the album. Since this is a CD I just skip the Gregorian chants.

The choir is mix of men and women that create a unique vocal effect. The sound of the female voices is haunting and uplifting. Their voices create a wonderful sound that contrasts again the voices of the male singers. The sound is very bright and clear - probably a combination of great voices, excellent church acoustics and excellent sound engineering.

According to the liner notes all the songs on this except one were previously unrecorded. Agnus Dei is the best song on this disc and is worth the entire price of the whole disc. Given the unique repetoire, this disc is welcomed addition to any choral library."
Reverent music

"This music transports me. It is soothing, worshipful, and humbling. The Chant of Christmas Midnight is the perfect reminder of what Christmas is all about. The description on the CD jacket: "The Schola Cantorum of men's and women' voices brings both Gregorian Chant and counterpart singing to celebrate the mystery and beauty of the Midnight Mass." The church ambience adds to the reverent feeling this music helps to create. The music is so beautiful that it seems sacrilegious to talk about the details! The CD is 58 minutes long. It was recorded in 1995 at Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Chicago, IL. The CD liner is quite good, 12 pages long. The audio quality is very acceptable. The English words are included. Highly recommended."
