CD Reviews

Best you'll find, almost
08/14/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This has all of Ronnie's charted songs except 3 titles, the best collection you'll find on him. Many CDs you see here are not the original recordings, this one is! The only downfall to this (as Collectables so often does) is that some of the tracks (if not all) are off of vinyl, and they haven't even taken the time to restore them, so a few are crackly. I believe most of their newer releases are off masters now."
One of the unsung heroes of 60's song

"Ronnie Dove's name rarely if ever comes to mind nowadays when one remembers the great male balladeers of the mid-60's, but it definitely belongs in that pantheon. For reasons a lot of 60's music fans never understood, his records never got the wide airplay they deserved and he was underappreciated in his own time. However, he always had a loyal following of fans who liked his distinctive style and his indivudual way with a love song. I came of musical age a little after Ronnie Dove's time, but my wife came of age then and was one of his biggest fans and the one who really introduced me to his music. When she found out that Amazon had his greatest hits on CD she insisted that I buy it as she hadn't heard these songs in years as they are never played on the radio, not even on stations with easy listening formats. It has proved to be one of my best CD purchases as Ronnie's voice was a revelation. The songs are well crafted and Ronnie's reading of the lyrics is straightforward but loaded with sincerity and feeling. In my opinion, Ronnie in his heyday was every bit as outstanding a ballad singer as Bobby Vinton and Gene Pitney and should have been as popular with the public as they were. Anybody willing to expand their 60's pop sensibilities beyond the familiar should buy a copy of this CD."
