Synopsis

This Is My Time is sweet-faced teen queen Raven-Symone's first big-statement album: She's retiring the little girl fluff stuff, these songs seem to say, and trying on material mature enough to push her past CosmoGirl and Teen People's readerships into the grownup racks. If there's anything surprising to this, it's how well it works. First track "Mystify" is a shimmering Indian-influenced number that sidles up to the underexplored place where hip-hop meets smooth R&B; "Overloved" engages with yearn-and-burn vocals set to the wordplay of legendary songwriter Diane Warren; and "Grazing in the Grass," the CD's only cover, is playful enough to recall the old Raven but fits in here for its flirtatiousness--it intentionally invites Janet Jackson comparisons. In addition to proving it's her time to take on adult themes, Raven makes the case that stylistic zigs and zags don't throw her. If pop, dance, and R&B are her jumping-off points, she uses them to expert effect for an easy landing into rock ("This Is My Time") and the irresistible club jam that is "Bump." "I don't wanna be just typical," Raven sings on "Typical," a rock-influenced closing track. If there wasn't much of a chance of that happening prior to My Time, it's all but impossible now. --Tammy La Gorce

CD Reviews

It should be her time!

"Raven's album was a surprise for me, I know she has done previous albums, but have never heard them, cause at first I thought she'd be cheesy, another Hilary Duff, Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, Britney with urban appeal u know? No disrespect to any of those artist, I just don't believe their words, voice talent or motives for doing music. Raven can sing, so I found out I was wrong. Slowly I started catching episodes here and there of 'That's So Raven', and I have to say it's a guilty pleasure, but she's so talented that I cannot take that away from her. I heard "Backflip" once on BET when they did ACCESS GRANTED, I did not know she had an album dropping, I took my chances picked it up. It is different, bold in its own right and shows her true personality. I was content, and I am a huge fan of people like Mariah Carey, Janet, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Christina Milian...didn't think there would be room for a Raven, but there is LOL, she has impressive things to say for her age, seems so balanced and comes off calmly on her album, does not need to lose weight, take off clothes or sell her self out to be heard, and has shown she makes music cause she likes it, not cause she expects 2x's platinum records. That's what defines an artist, once they start doing albums for personal glory not publicity. I give her credit. "Backflip", "Mystify", "Set Me Free", "Alice" (Great message, creative), "Bump", "Typical" stand out, "Life Is Beautiful" is funky and "Grazing In The Grass" is reminiscent of her smile, fresh and fun."

"Perhaps her best album yet, Raven-Symone's "This Is My Time" is no letdown. From the first song to the last, nothing on this album is anything short of a wonderful treat. Sticking with the R&B/Pop genre that weaved its way through her two previous albums, her music has a mature edge to it, but I still don't think we'll be seeing "Parental Advisory" stickers on her CDs anytime soon. Every song on this album is musically pleasing to listen to; her strong voice works with anything given to her. Hilary Duff's wafer thin vocals don't hold a candle to Raven's powerful voice, which was good in the beginning and simply got stronger as she got older.

Many users on Amazon have claimed her album to be "boring". The ones who find this album "boring" are the 10 year olds who were expecting a little bubble-gum-pop Spice Girls revival instead of actual music. Many songs on this album are capable of being smooth R&B classics. If you're still in middle school, stick with Hilary Duff until you can start listening to some real music. Maybe once you're a freshman you'll be able to handle "This Is My Time". This is Raven-Symoné's "Control" album. I can't wait for her "Rhythm Nation"..."
Nothing less than excellence!
