CD Reviews

I only think of The Pacemakers when I think Mersey Sound.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"There was a simplicity of form and melody in the Pacemakers music, but that's not to say it was simple. Gerry and the Pacemakers took the sweet Mersey Sound and brought it to its fullest depth and richness. They were the quintessential ambassadors of that sound. Maybe it was the voice of Gerry Marsden, still as strong an artist today as he was thirty years ago (though not often heard). Maybe it was the engineering - a balance of the instruments and slight echoing on the vocals with guitars never overbearing and the drums only keeping the beat. DON'T LET THE SUN CATCH YOU CRYIN' is a standard by all definitions and one song that any true singer with any depth of feeling can make his own. Overshadowed by the Beatles, many Mersey groups never really got their due...Gerry and the Pacemakers was recognized but not nearly as much as they deserved. This album gives the listener a well-balanced taste of their superior musical talents. This is an album for any collection of true British pop music...or pop music, period."

"Though they had only brief success in the United States, these Liverpudlian lads made the American Top 40 charts seven times--thrice making the top 10. All eleven of their U.S. chart entries are included on this CD, which makes other collections either too paltry or too stuffed. All original hits with good liner notes."

"I want to agree with the reviewer from Chicago. This collection is excellent and this band was and still is a true refection of the 60's Mersey Sound. My question is this. Where is the video to Ferry Cross the Mersey probably the key video that portrays this band and Liverpool from the early 60's. Gerry still lives and performs in Liverpool and did not buy a ranch in Santa Barbara and turn his nose up at his roots. Those roots are much to be proud of and the film would be the perfect supplement to this beatiful CD. Buy this CD. Help resurrect this missing film."
