SPIRITS AMONG US !!
Claudio Penteriani | Brazil | 08/31/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Mr.Toop is an excelent writer ( his books `Ocean Of Sound' and `Exotica' are indispensables ) musician and recording artist. He lives in London and is a current writer for english magazine 'The Wire'. In this album David Toop explore a parallel world. The sounds here are like a ghosts.
Eletronic ambient, noises ,voices in the empty spaces, tablas, echoes, hypnotics rhytms, asian soundscapes, drones are elements that shaped the sounds of this record.
All in this album remind me a parallel universe, our subconscious.
The Toshinori Kondo`s eletric trumpet evokes Miles Davis`s 70`spirit ( eletric period ). Listen " Spirits Shimmered Among The Live People "- 24 minutes of pure eletronic cyber-jazz.
Don`t Be afraid and enjoy the David Toop`s `Spirit World'.
It`s an Incredible World !!"
Enthralling, frightening, and never dull

"Toop gives Fourth World a good name w/ this one. He seems to be on some sort of electronic safari...aether tourist. This music is too involving to deserve the ambient tag given it by Virgin, but functions extremely well as incidental music also. A sometimes oppressive mix of live instruments, electronics (incl. some beats courtesy of Witchman), and various indigenous instruments from around the world, it always veers away from the wash of sound just in time to avoid the head-nod, throwing an~ odd chime or an electronic squawk in the mix.
