Electronic hybrid incorporating "fourth world" concept
10/27/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Writer/sound scavenger david toop has produced one of the finest electronic/dub hybrids of 1996. Articulating jon hassell's "fourth world" concept, this album spans the globe in 66 minutes charting/constructing some of the most dynamic sound oscillations of electronic, dub and spoken word this planet has to offer. Toop imagines a world where nothing is fixed and any sound is fodder for mutations towards a multiple realm of space. Although this may sound theoretical, in practice this recording holds together quite well, flowing in an organic manner and couched in some fine rythmic movements. Acoustic flutes and percussion dance beside soothing electronica making it a fine purchase for both those new to current electronic genres and elder listeners alike. A memorable appearnace by polyphonic saxaphonist Evan Parker provides toop with the tapestry of breaths he is searching for in this ever growing soundscape of body and cosciousnes. Listeners will no doubt get a lot of milege out of this recording. Highly recommended!"
