CD Reviews

Best "unknown" artist alive today
08/29/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"David Knopfler shows us two things on Small Mercies. One; He's slipped the shadow of his more famous brother Mark, (both were in Dire Straits, but David left, as best I can tell, after Communique, the bands second album. Two; His writing ability is perhaps the finest in existence today. To give you an idea of the caliber of his writing, there is only one person I can compare him to on this count, early Bob Dylan. Perhaps this is no coincidence. There is a similarity in David's voice, (as there is with Mark's) and Dylan's during Dylan's better vocal moments, ie., Tangled Up in Blue. Perhaps Dylan was an influence on both of these english lads. While all the songs in this collection are strong enough to stand on their own, pay particular attention to; Track 3, "I Remember It All", haunting and passionate. Track 4, "A Woman", a beautiful, melodic tribute to someone special. Track 5 the poetic and (autobiographical?), "All My Life". And track 8, "Weeping in the Wings", a powerful and provocative epic of a song, (5 minutes long, but only the third longest on the CD).The writing, instrumentation and recording quality of this CD are superb. It's amazing to me that he hasn't gotten more recognition, at least on some alternate format radio stations. As with all truely great albums this one gets better and better with each listening. Show yourself a "small mercy" and pick-up this album immediately, you will not be disappointed."
Glad I Bought It

"Excellent CD. It had not received much attention, so I was a bit unsure about the purchase. After I bought it and listened to it a couple of times, I was very pleased. Great music--not sure why he has not been more popular."
David Knopfler's Best Album to date
10/13/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is an excellent example of David Knopflers work. David actually has seven albums out of which this is the only one available in stores. There are 14 tracks on this album and if you get to the last one and have any children you are in for a gut check. What an excellent writer! I dont quite understand the music biz yet so I don't understand why David is not played on radio stations, I sure hope this changes in the future."
