Smoky ecclecticism

"This collection of twists and turns is not for everyone. Of course, in today's world, that means it might just appeal to a large number of people who are turned off by formatted superficiality. Mavis Staples backed by the Iguanas, without the growling bass sax, is one way to describe the majority of cuts. The songs are well-crafted and the instrumentation has a pleasing edge that's more mellow than rough. The group shines when Brenda Patterson wobbles and wails through bluesy cuts such as "Not Enough Love" and "Ring Me Up" (a cut covered by Maria Muldaur). Cooley's House, a Memphis product, seems to follow a quasi-experimental route that made the city the home of musical creativity in the first place. Thankfully, nothing predictable here and some nice surprises in this mixed bag of tricks."
