Great And Rare Bing Crosby Christmas Album
rodney wiltin | Ottawa, Ontario, Canada | 12/24/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Until very recently and despite my constant searching for new christmas cd's or reissued christmas albums from decades ago, I had no idea that this 1972 album by BING CRSOBY had ever been recorded and existed. This was such a surprise to have a christmas album by a person of such high rank (perhaps even the highest) when it comes to christmas music that I had no idea about. I had always thought BING'S last christmas album was in the 1960's. And another surprise was that every single song on this album I didn't have anywhere else, no compilations or whatever. Every song was a new christmas experience with BING. And a third surprise was that almost every song, 8 out of the 10 of them I didn't even know so most of the album was completely brand new to me and to have somebody like BING introduce them to me, it was one of the greatest experiences in my 8 or so years in collecting christmas music. And even the other 2 songs I know are rare and I hardly have any versions of them so they're kinda new and fresh as well. While they don't use the original cover, at least they kept all the songs on this reissued cd and what a cheap price too.

Another great thing about this album (cd) is that every single song is great. Really great. Especially my 3 favorite songs on the album: A TIME TO BE JOLLY, AND THE BELLS RANG, and THE SONG OF CHRISTMAS, but every other one is super. ROUND AND ROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE and WHEN YOU TRIM YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE are also probably as great as my top 3 songs mentioned above so I may have 5 top songs. In fact, CHRISTMAS IS is also up there too so make that 6 favorite songs.

This album has a nice orchestra backing with lot's of strings but if there's any weakness here to my liking (but not to take away any of the 5 out of 5 stars by any means) is that some of the music and production is a little modern, especially when compared to BING'S other christmas stuff. However, there is still some nice traditional stuff as well and whether a little more modern or traditional, alot of the arrangemnts are real nice, often very upbeat and lively.

You also get a real nice chorus backing. And of course, you get BING'S unmistakeable voice, he still sings very great (maybe not as great as some of his greatest greatest stuff, but it's still BING singing and it's still an awesome voice). Also and often, the chorus starts with a song not listed anywhere but it's usually only for a matter of seconds before going into the actual listed song itself. This is another strong point with this cd which I really like. You'll probably recognize some/all of these songs that the chorus starts with.

What can I say but it's BING, it's a rare christmas album on cd, and it's great. This is reason right there to buy it. Adding to that, it'll be really nice to play this for yourself and for company for over the christmas holidays that will have BING'S great voice, a voice I'm sure everybody will be familiar with at christmas, but a christmas offering that will be very different and fresh/unique/original from what you (and others) are familiar with when it comes to BING and christmas music. Obviously and as already noted, a very high recommendation from me."
Happy to find this recording

"This recording was always my favorite Christmas record when I was growing up. When I found the recording on Amazon and listened to clips of each song, tears streamed down my cheeks as warm childhood memories flooded my mind. I will cherish this recording and am so happy to have found it.

One thing about it that brings a grin to my face is listening to "A Christmas Toast." Our record was scratched and it always skipped in that same place each time I listened to it. I now can hear the words that were always skipped!
