CD Reviews

Transcendent!
Matthew Benson | Cosmos, MN United States | 05/26/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I absolutely loved this recording and the music on it. The "Overture to Candide" was excellent, as was the "Suite from Candide." My particular favorite from the whole CD, however, would be the third "Meditation," because of the divine cello solo, performed by Anthony Ross. I wasn't particularly fond of the "Five Songs," but I liked the capricious air of "Silhouette." The "Divertimento" is also exquisite. Well, as you can see, I love nearly every track of this CD, but together it is much more than the sum of its parts."
Prominent and swinging

"This is an amazing recording! Not only the music of Bernstein is surprisingly vivid, the stability and range of the recording by Reference Recordings makes it a delight to the ear. The overture to Candide lures you to think there's mockery in the air, but through the imaginative findings of the composer you will soon be captivated. The three meditations from mass with Anthony Ross on cello are wonderful depictions of solitude in an awesome setting of sound depth. The parodies on Copland and Ives are amusing."
A Fun Recording for Audiophiles
Karl W. Nehring | Ostrander, OH USA | 07/16/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"It is hard to believe that Leonard Bernstein, more pitiable than admirable in his later years, has been gone for about two decades now. Among his students was Eiji Oue, former music director of the Minnesota Orchestra. Oue leads the orchestra in several Bernstein compositions that showcase several facets of Bernstein as a composer. Probably the most appealing to most audiophiles will be the Overture and Suite from Bernstein's ill-fated Broadway musical, Candide, captured in full-bore audiophile-quality HDCD-encoded sound by Keith Johnson. Some may find the bass a bit overbearing; I found it to be fun.

This CD might be just the thing for showing off your audiophile system to your friends. It really is fun, both musically and sonically."
