CD Reviews

A little odd, but nice.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This odd little compilation is actually quite nice, and geared, perhaps, more at the seasoned fan than the casual Beach Boys listener. Some of the tracks are bona fide classics, but many of them are really cool but little known hidden gems.

Other than used copies, this was never available anywhere other than at Starbucks coffee joints, but it was-- and is-- worth seeking out. The person(s) responsible for putting this set together obviously knew their Beach Boys. How else can you explain such an eclectic mix? From well known hits like "Don't Worry Baby" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" to deep album tracks like "Disney Girls" and "Sail On Sailor", everything here is top-drawer. It even includes "Caroline No", perhaps the most beautiful and heartbreaking song they ever recorded. Unless you are a true, long-time fan who continued to listen into the 70's, you might not recognize some of this material. But to quote the Beatles, a splendid time is guaranteed for all. Just check out "Cool Cool Water" and see if it doesn't transport you to another place. There are many Beach Boys compilations available, but this little disc is amazing. The only thing that would make it any better would be if it were longer. 14 tracks only scratches the surface.

Buy this disc. Then, if you like what you hear-- and you will-- check out some of the later and lesser known Beach Boys albums such as "Holland" or "Surf's Up". You're gonna be hooked for life. And you'll wonder where this stuff has been hiding all these years. Enjoy!"
