The Next Wave
05/30/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Who can say what the next wave will be? Whatever it may be, albums like this one will never go out of style. AZITA, formerly known for her post-punk deconstructions in Scissor Girls and Bride of No-No, goes all classic rock on Enantiodromia. Displaying a true proclivity for jazzy keyboard licks and quasi-classical compositions, Azita knocks out pop tunes that will remind some of Rikki Lee Jones, Laura Nyro, Joy of Cooking, Steely Dan and Essra Mohawk! A super-tite rhythm section of John McEntire on drums and Matt Lux on bass consolidates this appeal with judicious, delicious minimalism - like all the best hits of R-n-B! Fronting their sleek shows of musical virtuoisity with acid-tongued drooling, Azita establishes her personality - all original, all the way, take it or leave it. This ain't no retro record. Expression is the thing - and it's there in spades on Entantiodromia, from the words and music to the speed-crazed sleevenote to the album's overarcing artiness. A great pop album from an unlikely quarter! Fans of diverse, eclectic, informed pop music should try this for something even more different."
