Synopsis

Album Description
"AWOL One has one of rap's most original voices...[a] Los Angeles MC who offers up throaty, free association jams about solitude and agony." - SPIN "AWOL One's beguiling, bizarre and bottomlessly imaginative concept record Souldoubt is one of the year's best albums, a weird mix of pathos and sci-fi, humor and depression; a collection of stabs at stability in a disturbed world." - L.A. WKKELY "When this L.A. rapper opens his mouth, laconically cryptic verses tumble out in a drowsily narcotic timbre. The lyrics he rambles are deceptively direct, yet there's always the nagging feeling that something far more sinister lurks beneath the surface, a hunch he likes to encourage." - URB AWOL One is a member of the Shapeshifters, longtime underground hip-hop legends. The L.A. Weekly nailed his style when they called him "deceptively direct." And KRS-One had it pegged when he said "AWOL, you're true hip-hop for real!" Honestly, where does an MC go from there?

CD Reviews

AWOL BUM is Garbage Hip-Hop
Crackpot Earl | 06/28/2006
(1 out of 5 stars)

"First, anyone who gives this CD a high rating has lost their mind and is probably working in the AWOL BUM camp.

This guy's FLOW IS TERRIBLE, the BEATS ARE WEAK (except for a couple of exceptions), and the LYRICS ARE UNORIGINAL. The HOOKS ARE BEYOND TERRIBLE.

I bought this WASTE OF PLASTIC for full price because I like to give underground artists a try, but this reminds me that you can get a freshly laid piece of soggy poo every now and then.

I am sure people will say I don't get it, but seriously I don't want to get it. This is not different in a good way, this is an AUTHENTIC PIECE OF GARBAGE. Some people deserve to be MCs, but some people need to stay in their mom's basement.

The only highlights are the guest apperances, but even then I FEEL BAD FOR THE GUEST MCs because they would sound better on their own tracks. How much did this guy have to pay to get these people to work with him? Each guest totally outshines AWOL BUM.

If you want something more original try Deep Thinker-Necks Move, POS-Audition, The Perceptionists-Black Dialogue, Ohmega Watts-The Find, Living Legends, Murs, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, MF Doom, etc...JUST TO NAME A FEW BETTER THAN AWOL BUM. Really, alomost anything would be better than this crap.

He says "little kids grow up wanting to be AWOL one"...Well I would regret having kids if that was the case in my house.

I am pissed off that I was stupid enough to be enticed by the nice list of guest producers and MCs, because they can't help rescue this SUNKEN TURD.

This CD has NO bump value, NO headphone value, NO lyrical value, POOR production value, and NO overall hip-hop value."
