"When I first heard "One of Our Girls," I had been watching "Twin Peaks" on TV back in 1990. This album, kinda like the first few episodes of "TP," marries odd, slightly unsettling textures with angelic, pleasant, and comforting tidbits. The reason why I was drawn to the album in the first place was because I was (and am) a big Wire fan. Though AC Marias is nothing like Wire, both bands share a tendency to challenge your ideas about music. Be forewarned: "One of Our Girls" is not everyone's cup of tea. I was so enthralled when I first purchased the CD back in '90 that I showed my sister, whose musical tastes I respect without question. When she heard the opening track, "Trilby's Couch," she laughed. Later on, I lent the CD to a friend and I only came to replace the album just now. I feel elated to have AC Marias back in my personal soundtrack.
Is AC Marias good for you, though? That's a tough one to call.
You would best be served by trying to find some sample bites before you dish out 20 bucks to get this one. If, on the other hand, you are familiar with AC Marias, then you shouldn't blink twice. Get this CD in your collection ASAP. Like this CD there is no other."
