Exceptional introduction to an extraordinary conductor

"Philippe Herreweghe, born in Ghent and schooled by Jesuits, studied piano and then medicine and psychiatry before embarking on a career as a conductor. This 2-CD/1-DVD set is an excellent introduction to the man and his work. The music is delightful, precise, moving, and at times sublime. After listening to these CDs and watching the DVD I want to add more Herreweghe CDs to my collection, and toward that end I recently ordered Herreweghe's Mozart's Requiem on the Harmonia Mundi label, and the budget-priced 4-CD collection Bach: Cantatas & Masses (quite a bargain at a list price of $16.98) conducted by Herreweghe and published on the Virgin label (most of Herreweghe's recordings are on Harmonia Mundi ). I highly recommend Philippe Hereweghe by Himself. The music is great and the DVD offers insight into the creative process and inner depths of an extraordinary conductor."
