Eschenbach is clearly a wizard of the keyboard and one just can't help falling in love with his Bach and his Czerny ... just to name a few.
His approach is classical and rightly so. While they have every regard to the scores, there is no compromise of spontaneity. And as a matter of style, his playing is more German than Viennese. And even though there isn't too much pathos in his reading as such, his playing nonetheless brings out the darker side of Mozart very well. The remastered sound is however just above average.
Recommended especially for the beginners/intermediate pianists with a keen interest for good articulation. For the general music lovers, it is likely that they will find the more romantic approach of Ingrid Haebler (Philips) with fuller use of rubato, stronger contracts and plentiful of nuances, and above all, with a better recorded sound more to their taste. Nonetheless, one should also point out that Eschenbach had obviously chosen a perfect partner in these pieces, more so than perhaps Haebler."
