CD Reviews

An anthological compilation!

"Last week I was pleased to receive this album. In first place I would like to tell you about the impressive version of De Sabata in this notable recording of 1939. This Requiem must be included among the most electryfying performances ever made. De Sabata and the magnificent cast of soloists provide us of a vibrant, radiant and sumptuous version of this masterpiece.

Nadia Boulanger directs the famous Requiem of Gabriel Faure. Her pulse, dynamism and emotional approach constitutes not only notable and even historical vewrsion, besides it's one of the most beloved perfomances among the hard fans of this French composer.

Toscanini gives us a mercurial and epic performance of Beethoven 's Mass, through his well known way of conducting. You must have this version at the moment to compare against any other radiant version (I still remind the famous version of Clemen Kraus with the Vienna Philharmonic ion the late thirties).

As you may guess, I am not precisely an admirer of Mr. K. but I must recognize the German Requiem is vibrantly performed. This is the well reminded version of 1947 with the musical support of the Vienna Philharmonic.

But if besides, you consider the unbelievable low price of four albums, you won't believe how gratyfying and captivating will be this album for you in the recent future to come.

Please, make yourself a favor and acquire this admirable edition. You will never be dissapointed. You have my word.

Historic Mozart Requiem

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Back in LPs early years, there appeared in a boxed set of 10" discs, the Mozart Requiem, conducted by De Sabata, and with the operatic luminaries of the day, Tassinari, Stignani, Tagliavini, and Tajo singing. Something tells me that it was recorded on Cetra Soria, but maybe that's a leap. The performance is first rate, the remastering is surprisingly well done for a late '30s performance. It is a truly inspired performance, and worth having no matter which modern performance and recording you may also choose to have.
