CD ReviewsGreat Prog Rock Antony W. Alumkal | Denver, CO USA | 01/16/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "This is the third album by this Colorado progressive rock band and their best one yet. Once again, they experienced lineup changes as guitarist and bassist Matt Zafiratos left the band, producer Scott Cleland joined on guitars, cello, and vocals, and Jonathan Patch joined on bass, acoustic guitars, flute, and vocals. Both newcomers are excellent musicians.
Soundwise, the album splits the difference between retro sounding prog rock bands like Glass Hammer and more modern sounding prog rock bands like Echolyn. Contributing to the retro feel is keyboardist John Green's use of analog and "virtual analog" synths, real Hammond organ, and for the first time MELLOTRON samples. (Thanks for finally taking my advice. :-)) Compositionally, this is a significant step beyond their previous album. All songs are attributed to the whole band, but clearly Cleland and Patch have made important contributions in the song-writing department. So what's not to like? Well, Singularity has never quite recovered from losing original lead singer Andy Goldhawk. John Green handles most of the vocals. His voice is pleasant enough during the softer passages, but he doesn't have the vocal chops to belt out loud passages effectively. Still, I found this a very enjoyable recording. I look forward to their next one." |
