"I bought this CD because I fell in love with a performance of the Allegretto movement of Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31 No. 2 (The Tempest) that I heard in college. And, while that performance was moving, I found Brendel's rendition to be less personalized and rushed.
I understand that Alfred Brendel plays these sonatas as they were originally intended to be played by the composer, and that was one of major reasons that I purchased this CD. Once I listened to the "true" Allegretto movement, I respected Alfred Brendel even more because of his mastery of the tempo and subtle volume control required to play this sonata.
This movement procedes in hills and valleys of both tempo and volume, and the performance that I recollect from college consisted of high, peaked hills and long shallow valleys; however, in Brendel's performance there are frequent, rolling hills and subtle valleys that emphasize the sonority of more distinct measures."
