Bach Rocks!
David Gottner | 08/13/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The works presented are the Bach Keyboard concerto #1, the corale "Wachet Auf" and a partita, which seems to be loosely based on the keyboard concerto. This is perhaps the best Jazz/classical crossover album out there. The jazz trio plays in a blues-y style, yet they still don't lose the spirit of Bach's works. Gabriel's piano playing is supberb. His tone when playing bach is similiar to Glenn Gould's - perhaps the standard for Bach on piano. Sometimes during the concerto, Gabriel plays the jazzy line in one hand and the classical line in the other, which because of their radically different styles, makes this sound like a work for two pianos.Technically, the CD has been recorded exceptionally well, and will put you right there in the concert hall.I am still waiting to receive the Loussier bach CDs I ordered from Amazon, but based on the Loussier recordings I have of Vivaldi and Satie, and a Loussier/Bach concert that was airing on Cable TV, I prefer the Gabriel trio over Loussier. Gabriel keeps the classical structure of the work intact, yet within that framework, get ready to rock & roll! (er. Jazz...)"
