A fine balance between intellect and passion

"This recording has been a well-known collector's item for many years. Enescu made very few recordings during his life and most of his discs are extremely rare. So it is great to have a CD transfer of his major achievement. Enescu was one of the early champions of these works, along with Adolf Busch, Joseph Szigeti and Bronislaw Huberman. Enescu's performance has a fine balance between intellect and passion. Although he was past prime technically (Enescu was about 68 when he recorded these works), he plays with great intensity and deep respect towards the music. His almost viola-like dark tone brings extra dimention to these works. Recording is a bit fuzzy and Enescu's intonation is fallible, but it is still worthwhile to listen to this recording, especially if one is working on these music."
