"Listening to the Bach Cello Suites has become something of an addiction for me. And within that addiction, I suppose I could say this particular recording of them has become a sub-addiction. Don't get me wrong, I love the Yo Yo Ma and Rostropovich recordings. However, after a while, something new and different is much appreciated.ter Linden performs these at a fairly pedestrian rate (especially when compared to some of the newer recordings done by, say, Maisky). Also, he plays with a an understated dynamic range and avoids heavy vibrato (he is playing on a baroque cello, of course). While for many cellists, this approach would lead to a flat, plodding, and uninspired sound. However, out of Jaap ter Linden's cello comes a delicately phrased sound, and an undeniable dance feel, unique to each movement. It's a truly remarkable feat.If there is one complaint, it'd be the audible huffing and puffing on some of the more difficult passages. However, this isn't anything new - many of the cellists do this, and it's hard to blame them for such exertions on monsters like the 6th Suite. This is a wonderful recording of the suites, and should be added to the collection of anything who enjoys interpretations like those of Fournier and Wispelway."

"I am not a musician, nor an expert. By no mean. I am just a Bach's zealot. I love Bach's music over anything else in the world (I mean in the music world! I am not crazy yet... I hope).
And the cello suites are among my very best Bach's favorite works. I have Rostropovich's Casals' and quite a few further versions. But I prefer Jaap's one. As one already said, it's a kind of addiction.
Moreover, I used this music to get my little baby asleep when she was weeks, months old. She now is 5, and calls Bach her "Uncle Johann Sebastiann". I am proud of her!
Regards from Spain."

"This recording is such a breath of fresh air.Let's be honest;for years, performers of these works were under heavy Casals' influence, even the younger of them.I'm not a psycho but I felt Casals' phantom over Matt Haimovitz, also Yo-Yo Ma playing that just like he was looking for a so new, original,Bach Buda way to perform these suites and so on.However,Jaap ter Linden did,and better. His performance is pleasant, refined, unaffected, without all that old fashioned, oversentimental tones, especially Suite no.6,performed in great brightness on Linden's five strings Amati,c.1600.We must to be truly grateful 'cause Casals becames well know all this marvelous music but it's in good time just to carry on.Excellent sonics by HM engineers.A must have for Bach lovers."
Baroquement beau !

"Le violoncelle de J.T Linden a une grosse voix, un peu
réverbérée par l'acoustique.
Le jeu n'est jamais précipité. Les rythmes ne sont pas très
«rebondissant».La priorité est plutôt portée sur une sonorité
ronde; Ter Linden semblant chercher à faire sonner son violoncelle plutôt qu'à imposer un feu d'artifice.
Le violoncelle Bergonzi(1725)utilisé ici vaut le détour à lui seul. À essayer!"
