CD ReviewsA BLUES CLASSIC! Patrick Earley | Edmond, Oklahoma USA | 06/15/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "This is a gem of a blues album, and besides that it's a truckload full of fun. Clarence Brewer is a super acoustic and electric slide guitar player. If that's not enough, he's brought in fellow Springfield, Missouri musicians the Skeletons to back him. This is one hot band! Brewer has a great deep voice tailor made to sing the blues. The songs on here, for the most part, are upbeat, and at times very funny. Like in the opener "Bedspring Boogie", and the hilarious "Fast Food Slow Death", where he sings about delicious things like hotdog meat and ordering that burial plot with your next order of cheeseburger and fries. He also has some biting lyrics when he comes down hard on the grand old party with the tune "Old GOP", which also happens to have a great toe-tappin' beat with some killer hooks. He does a couple slow and spooky tunes back to back here with "Graveyard Blues" and "Halloween Blues". There's also four covers songs. He does a dead on rendition of John Lee Hooker's "Whiskey and Women". And one of my favorites, Procol Harum's "Whiskey Train". This is a very bluesy version with some seriously good slide guitar working here, and a great way to close this fine album. "KING CLARENCE" is about as close to perfection as a blues record gets. I've told many of my blues lovin' friends about this album, and they all come back with the same reaction, fantastic! I've collected a lot of blues over the years, and this easily makes my top 10 list. It's a one of a kind blues album that comes highly recommended." We demand the 2nd album ! ! !
