CD Reviews

Overall excellent performance, but weak recording quality.

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Delightful period instrument performances of all the Beethoven Violin Sonatas. Well judged tempi and spontinaity to the musicians playing that gives the feeling of a live performance. I think the recording was made with little or no editing at all, because you do hear an occasional mistake in the piano parts, but it does not detract from the enjoyment of the playing. The instruments themselves have a warm and appealing sound to them as well.
My only complaint is the quality of the recording. The microphones sound far away from the musicians in a very reverberant room. But this is typical of most of the Nimbus recordings I've heard. The sound quality isn't aweful, but could have been a lot better, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5.
I've heard other recordings of Beethoven sonatas on period instruments. The sound engineering was better on those, but I much prefer the performance of Hudson and Verney, and this is the only period instrument recording I know of all the violin sonatas."
