This odd 20-track Dion CD is interesting in that it
has different mixes on some tracks than those which
appeared on other, better-known Dion hits packages.
While the database describes this as being on the
"Prudence Germany" label, my copy is on the "3C" label.
But this was clearly authorized by Laurie Records, the
original label for the material. The Laurie logo
appears on the back insert, along with "1988 Continental
Communications Corp., Norwood, NJ." It also says "All
selections digitally remastered from original tapes, all
selections in stereo except #9, SOUND ENHANCED FOR BETTER
SOUND QUALITY."

Listening on headphones, I detected significant differences
in the following tracks, compared to the recordings I
already had of these songs on various other Dion CDs:

The Wanderer, Lovers Who Wander, Sandy, Little Diane,
Lonely Teenager, and Come Go With Me. In some cases, the
version on "At His Best" just has more punch and presence
than on other CDs. On several songs, the left/right channels
are reversed from what I had heard before. On some, certain
elements (like the backing singers, for instance) are clearly
more emphasized than on other releases of the same songs.

Some of the non-hit material is fairly awful; songs like
"Stagger Lee" and "The Twist" sound like they were cranked
out in a hurry as album filler. But his versions of "Tonight Tonight"
and "P.S. I Love You" are really quite nice. And, like it says,
all but one track are in crisp clean stereo.

TRACK LIST FOR "DION: HIS BEST"

This 22-track disc from Time-Life has a solid lineup
of hit instrumentals, all but one a Billboard chart item
during the period 1958-1964.

The one non-charted song is "Apache,"
which WAS a top 10 hit in 1961, for Danish
guitarist Jorgen Ingmann. The compiler(s) of this CD
chose to include an earlier recording of the song by
The Shadows, Cliff Richard's back-up band.
They had recorded the song after hearing an earlier
version by British guitarist Bert Weedon. The Shadows'
recording reached #1 in England but did nothing when
released here in the USA. Jorgen Ingmann released
the song as the intended B-side of a 45 but deejays
"flipped" over it and it became a #2 hit for
Ingmann. The "Apache" saga is covered in detail in a
fine book by Steve Otfinoski, "The Golden Age of
Rock Instrumentals," a Billboard book from 1997.
("Apache" found new life in 1981, when it became the
basis for a rap hit by Sugarhill Gang, two years after
their breakout with "Rapper's Delight").

One barely-charted entry here is "Baja" by
The Astronauts, a Colorado group that adopted a surf
music style through four albums and a dozen singles
for RCA Records in 1963-64, when the label was
hoping for an act like Capitol Records had with
the Beach Boys at the time. But "Baja" was the only
single that charted for them...debuting at #94
the last week of July, 1963...and disappearing
from the chart the week after.

Here's the track list for "Axes and Saxes":

Excellent 1993 UK Virgin 2-disc set has forty of the
biggest dance hits in Europe & America during the late
1980s-early 1990s. All are original versions except

General Johnson (his given name) first found fame with his early 1960s group
the Showmen, whose 1961 anthem "It Will Stand" became a favorite of beach
music dancers on the Carolina shore. A series of recordings for the Minit
and Swan labels produced other beach classics but no further national hits.

By the late 60s, the Showmen had run their course and Johnson was looking
for another deal. Along came Motown expats Holland-Dozier-Holland, scouting
recruits for their new Invictus label. They matched Johnson with three
other musicians to form the Chairmen of the Board, whose first release was
"Give Me Just a Little More Time," a top ten hit across America in 1970.
The group would place five more singles on the Billboard Hot 100 ending in 1974.

At the same time, Johnson was proving his talent as a songwriter, too, with
hits like Clarence Carter's "Patches" (Grammy winner for best R&B song, 1971).

He also co-wrote Freda Payne's anti-war hit "Bring the Boys Home" and
Honey Cone's "Want Ads" and "Stick Up."

In 1976, Johnson found himself at Arista records, where his first single,
"All in the Family," was his most successful, reaching #22 on Billboard's
soul chart. Four subsequent Arista singles made the chart as well,
including "Don't Walk Away," which only reached #42 but is today considered
a highlight of the Arista sides. Most of the Arista material was combined
on an album which was inexplicably held back from release until 1977, when
it was issued to little fanfare and no chart success.

This disc features 11 of Johnson's best Arista tracks, plus a "special disco
version" of "Don't Walk Away." This is stellar 1970s soul, in a class with more
commercially successful music from the same era by the likes of Johnnie
Taylor, the Spinners, Manhattans, etc.

After his Arista stint, Johnson returned to his Carolina roots and
reunited with another of the former members of Chairmen of the Board.
They recorded pleasant music suited to the dancing crowds who continued
to support the beach music scene.

As the author of this disc's booklet says, Johnson's "inimitable
voice always identified everything that he was involved with as a
singer."

General Johnson died at age 69 in 2010.

Great old-timey Christmas stuff. The Voices were
an LA doo-wop group including Bob & Earl. Both
sides of their 1955 holiday single on Cash Records
are here, along with the Nic Nacs (AKA the Robins or
the Coasters), who added female blues belter Mickey
Champion to their lineup and recorded "Gonna Have
a Merry Christmas" as the b-side to a 1950 single
for the RPM label. The Cameos' record was an early
release on the Cameo label (naturally) and is a
fine uptempo doo-wop tune from 1957. Also of note:
both sides of the Moonglows' 1953 Chance Records
offering, and the duo of Louis Jordan & Ella
Fitzgerald on "Baby It's Cold Outside." This was
one of at least four recordings of that song to
reach the charts in the SUMMER, not the winter, of
1949.

Don't let the K-Tel label scare you away;
this is on K-Tel International, which appears
to be a more "legit" concern; at any rate, these
ARE all original tracks by original artists, not
the kind of "re-recorded" junk that K-Tel is
known for. And, actually, some of these are
tracks not commonly found on other compilations.
All are late-1980s r&b/dance tunes.

1) JOHNNY KEMP - Just Got Paid (3:31)
2) PAULA ABDUL - Knocked Out (3:51)
3) INFORMATION SOCIETY - What's on Your Mind (4:34)
4) ALEXANDER O'NEAL - Fake (3:11)
5) SHANICE WILSON - Can You Dance (4:47)
6) TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY - Dance Little Sister (4:12)
7) EVELYN 'CHAMPAGNE' KING - Flirt (3:41)
8) 10dB - I Second That Emotion (3:42)
9) JANE WIEDLIN - Rush Hour (4:03)
10) BARDEUX - When We Kiss (4:52)

Review Date: 5/25/2016

Among the best tracks on this 1997 Sony release of 1950s & 1960s
"dance craze" tunes are Ray Bryant's "Madison Time" and
Gene and Wendell's "The Roach," both of which were also featured on the soundtrack to the original 1988 film version of "Hairspray."

Also notable is Big Al Downing's "Georgia Slop," a 1964 remake
of a 1950s Jimmy McCracklin original, later remade again by
Los Lobos on their 1990 album "The Neighborhood."

Long before Michael Jackson made
moonwalking an international
pastime, soul singer Joe Simon was popularizing his own version
in a 1970 hit that reached #11 on Billboard's soul chart but
only #54 on the pop Hot 100.

Of the more obscure titles here, King Curtis' "Do the Monkey"
only managed to last two weeks on the Hot 100 in 1962, reaching
an unlofty peak of #92. And Billy Graves' "The Shag (Is Totally Cool)"
is one I've never seen on any other compilation CD, though it did
make it to #53 in 1959.

Beware the two Chubby Checker tracks; these are re-recordings, not
the Parkway originals. Everything else here is original as you
would have heard it on the radio back in the day. Well, sort of,
anyway. Archie Bell & The Drells' wonderful "Tighten Up," which I
remember fondly from the days of mono-muddy AM radio, is here in
clean original stereo, sounding better than ever.

And any CD that includes both the weirdly charming harmonies of
The Larks ("The Jerk," 1965) and the Bo Diddlley-influenced
chunka-chunk of Johnny Otis' "Willie and the Hand Jive" (1958),
gets a big thumbs-up here!

TRACK LIST -- "DANCING AT THE NICK AT NITECLUB"

RAY BRYANT The Madison Time
JR. WALKER & THE ALL-STARS Shotgun
VIBRATIONS The Watusi
LARKS The Jerk
DIAMONDS The Stroll
GENE & WENDELL The Roach
ARCHIE BELL & THE DRELLS Tighten Up
JOHNNY OTIS Willie and the Hand Jive
BIG AL DOWNING Georgia Slop
JOE SIMON Moon Walk Parts I and II
CHUBBY CHECKER Pony Time (re-recording)
KING CURTIS Do the Monkey
BILLY GRAVES The Shag (Is Totally Cool)
CHUBBY CHECKER Limbo Rock (re-recording)

This disc, sold at Pier One stores in 2004,
offers a dozen danceable hits from 1974-1980.
Most are in the shorter, radio-friendly versions
you heard on Top 40 and Urban stations back then
(though you do get a 6:39 version of "Love
Machine" and 5:33 worth of "Turn the Beat Around").

Actually, I was happy to find this for the
edit of LTD's "Back in Love Again," since
most LTD/Jeffrey Osborne compilations seem to use
an unnecessarily long 8:39 version. This
version, at 4:39, is still longer than the original
45 rpm single, which was cut down to 3:40.

These are all original recordings, no remakes.

EARTH WIND & FIRE September (3:36)
EMOTIONS Best of My Love (3:41)

Rhino's reissues of the Mitch Ryder/Detroit Wheels tracks, including this CD, have featured the original stereo mixes of the songs, whereas the other currently available
Ryder hits CD (on another label) has them in mono. It's a matter of preference; if you
like the stereo sound, this disc offers the five biggest hits the group scored between 1965 and 1967, and five other tracks which were either lower-charting singles or LP tracks. As with most of the Rhino Flashback CDs, the "booklet" is skimpy, though there are a few informative paragraphs about the group's history.

Title: Disco Fever
Artist: Disco Fever
Label: Madacy
Original Release Date: 4/26/2000
Date: 1/8/2017

The database indicates this as a Madacy release, but
I have it as a German Sony set. It is correctly a 3-disc
affair, as properly noted in "CD Details" on this page.
They also messed up the track lists, so I'm providing a
list below.

There are a few welcome oddities here,
including Unidisc tracks by Bohannon, Nick Straker, Indeep, Shannon, Musique, and Sharon Redd. Legendary O Records is represented by the Flirts and Divine. Most of the rest of the content is from the Sony Family, with too-familiar stuff from Labelle, Cheryl Lynn, etc., though you do get Billy Paul's seldom-seen 1977 revival of Jerry Butler's "Only the Strong Survive."

There are a few odd-label choices like Evelyn Thomas,
Imagination, Shirley & Co., John Paul Young,
and Timex Social Club. ALL of the above-mentioned are the original versions you heard at the time they were popular.

Then...unfortunately...THERE ARE SOME REMAKES.
The tracks by Gloria Gaynor, Amii Stewart, George McCrae, Scotch, Kano, and Tony Esposito are all re-recordings done in the 1990s.

All songs except three are the "single edit" versions that would have been used for 7" singles releases and radio play. You do get a 5:41 version of Indeep's great "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." The O records tracks by Divine (6:26) and The Flirts (5:00) are possibly the 12" single tracks?
