Being French and friend of Prevert, Montand knows what he sings and how to do it. He sings very simply, the arrangements are minimised (sometimes just the piano) but the articulation is perfect, you understand that there is nothing to add. The most compositions are written and arranged by famous Russian-origine French musicians Kosma. Moreover, these songs were generally examined by time ant kept this examination succesfully.
