CD Reviews

Quite a delightful album and one that benefits from repeated

"I got this album some time ago and I have recently been listening to it again. I have been so knocked out by Hikaru Utada's "Deep River" and Shiina Ringo's "Heisei Fuzoku", I have mistakenly neglected Yuki's excellent album.

I have recently watched some videoclips of songs from this album and there is something very engaging about Yuki. Yes, she does have a sweet, high and fragile Japanese voice, but she really does deliver the goods here and make the songs count. Sorry if that sounds a little vague.

Many may know Yuki from her work with the band, 'Judy and Mary'. Well, she moves well away from the Punk Rock sound on Commune into electronica, brass instruments, sampling and some orchestral sounds.

It is a rather joyous album and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get an idea of what good modern J-Pop is like. Yes, it IS Pop, but there are "edges" to this album and a general sense of "otherness" about it that I find most engaging. I can't think of any Western Pop singer who make albums like this one.
